Rashmi Varma uses clothing and textile as her medium.

Her design and art practices explore time, space and culture through the evolution of garments. She works as a multidisciplinary designer within the fields of fashion, film, television, theatre and art using garments to explore stories and ideas of history and culture. Primarily self-taught, Varma brings an organic approach to making and wearing clothes, focusing on texture, form and craft. She creates new forms and poetic images that are simplified in their appearance yet are multi-layered and complex upon closer inspection.

She was Costume Designer for the films Heaven on Earth (2008) and Cooking with Stella (2010) as well as the dance-theatre production TAJ (2011). Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, the Textile Museum of Canada and the Design Exchange, Toronto. With a profound love for India and its rich textile and garment traditions she has, over the years, worked extensively throughout the country designing for her namesake label, researching its sartorial history and working on various film and theatre projects.

Montreal-born Varma grew up between Canada, Saudi Arabia and India. She now divides her time between Toronto and New Delhi.
